Cray Inc. was awarded multiple honours, known as the Stevie awards, in the 2019 American Business Awards. Cray received a Gold Stevie for "Company of the Year - Computer Hardware" and a Silver Stevie award for "Most Innovative Tech Company of the Year - Up to 2500 Employees". In addition, Cray's CTO Steve Scott was recognized with a Gold Stevie for "Tech Innovator of the Year - Hardware/Peripherals" for his leadership and groundbreaking work in architecting Cray's revolutionary Slingshot interconnect. Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have come up with a way to manipulate tungsten diselenide (WSe2) - a promising two-dimensional material - to further unlock its potential to enable faster, more efficient computing, and even quantum information processing and storage. Focus on Europe

The CSC data centre in Kajaani will host a pan-European high-performance supercomputer. The machine will be about ten times more powerful than the most powerful supercomputer currently in Europe. The decision was made by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, a high performance computing (HPC) initiative supported by the European countries and the European Union. This decision will provide highly competitive HPC resources for Europe's scientific, industrial and public users. In addition, it will provide a framework for Europe to strengthen its position as one of the pioneers of the data-driven economy. Read further...
The EuroHPC JU has approved funding for three pre-exascale and 5 petascale supercomputers. The total value is 840 million euro of which almost half will be paid by the EuroHPC budget. At 9,4 Petaflop/s, Joliot-Curie is France's third supercomputer and is set to become the most powerful French research supercomputer in 2020 when it reaches 22 petaflops. Designed by the European leader in supercomputing, Atos, for the French national high-performance computing organisation (GENCI), this new supercomputer located at the CEA's Very Large Computing Centre (TGCC) was inaugurated on 3 June 2019 by François Jacq, CEA Chairman, Thierry Breton, Atos CEO, and Philippe Lavocat, GENCI CEO. Atos, a global expert in digital transformation, has signed a 4-year contract to deliver its latest supercomputer, the BullSequana XH2000, to Uninett Sigma2, the national e-infrastructure provider in Norway. The European Supercomputer MareNostrum 5, from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC) will incorporate an experimental platform aimed at developing new technologies for the future generation of supercomputers. The EuroHPC JU has selected Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) as one of the institutions that will host a pre-exascale supercomputer in the high-capacity supercomputer network promoted by the EC. The EC announcement describes the plan to acquire 8 supercomputers: 3 pre-exascale machines - with a peak performance of at least 150 Petaflops - and 5 petascale machines, capable of executing at least 4 Petaflops. Researchers from Goethe University in Frankfurt have been using HPC resources at the High Performance Computing Center in Stuttgart (HLRS) and at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) to support the massive Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project. Boston has launched the first offering in Europe for NVIDIA RAPIDS test drives at BostonLabs. This brings together NVIDIA RAPIDS, a suite of open-source software libraries giving data scientists the freedom to execute end-to-end data science and analytics pipelines entirely on GPUs, and Boston's 25 years of server hardware integration experience. Indiana University has selected a Cray Shasta supercomputing system to advance the use of artificial intelligence (AI) across diverse research fields at the university and for the state of Indiana. Indiana University will be the first university to deploy a Shasta system, the Cray Slingshot interconnect and Cray Urika AI Suite for Shasta, providing its engineers, researchers and scientists powerful resources for the next era of computing. Named "Big Red 200", the new supercomputer will be instrumental in the University's exploration and advancement of AI in education, cybersecurity, medicine, environmental science and more. According to a release issued in April by Georgia Institute of Technology, a serendipitous discovery by graduate student Dylan T. Christiansen has led to materials that quickly change colour from completely clear to a range of vibrant hues - and back again. The work could have applications in everything from skyscraper windows that control the amount of light and heat coming in and out of a building, to switchable camouflage and visors for military applications, and even colour-changing cosmetics and clothing. Some of the world's most powerful earthquakes involve multiple faults, and scientists are using supercomputers to better predict their behavior. Multi-fault earthquakes can span fault systems of tens to hundreds of kilometers, with ruptures propagating from one segment to the other. During the last decade, scientists have observed several cases of this complicated type of earthquake. Major examples include the magnitude (abbreviated M) 7.2 2010 Darfield earthquake in New Zealand; the M7.2 El Mayor - Cucapah earthquake in Mexico immediately south of the US-Mexico border; the 2012 magnitude 8.6 Indian Ocean Earthquake; and perhaps the most complex of all, the M7.8 2015 Kaikoura earthquake in New Zealand.
